In 1826 a society was formed in Boston, the American Temperance Society. Joining this group involved making a pledge to abstain from drinking distilled beverages. At the end of ten years, there were 8,000 local groups and 1.5 million who had pledged.
It was this group that was in large part responsible for prohibition which started in 1900. Making it one of the first social movements to mobilize national support for a single cause.
