1898 Chainless Bicycle

I stumbled upon this advertisement in the 1898 The Blacksmith & Wheelwright periodical and thought it of enough interest to share it with you. Columbia bikes are still made today but this one is rather unique it is made without a chain. Unfortunately it doesn't share how that works but you can see there is some sort of fastening from the pedals to the rear wheel to power the bicycle. The other interesting tidbit to notice is the cost of the bike, $125.00 dollars.

  1. Interesting, especially the price, which was a fortune back then! As a side note, modern motorcycles come with one of two basic drives: chain driven and shaft driven. Chains need occasional lubrication, like bicycles. Shaft-driven motorcycles are probably a fancier version of this bike: a drive shaft leads to the rear wheel hub and engages a gear.
